Proton Linear Accelerator
Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology has initiated R&D activity on development of various subsystems for a 100 MeV 352 MHz (pulse and high duty) Proton Linear Accelerator.
The proton beam from an ECR Ion source extracted at 50 keV will be first accelerated using a Radio Frequency Quadrupole Linac (RFQ) type pre-accelerator to an energy of 3 MeV. RFQ is an efficient accelerator for low energy ion/proton acceleration, where the ion beam is bunched, focused and accelerated using alternating gradient quadrupole fields. The proton beam from an RFQ will be injected in Alvarez type DTL and further accelerated to 10 MeV. From 10 MeV, it is proposed to accelerate the beam to 100 MeV using SFDTL type of accelerating structure.
LVCDS is involved in the development of Linear Accelerating structures for pulse mode applications to be used as an injector for high energy Proton Synchrotron & SC linac. Preliminary design studies have been conducted for the low energy part of the normal conducting Proton Linac comprising of 3 MeV 352 MHz RFQ, 352 MHz DTL and 352 MHz SFDTL The major activities relating to the development of Proton Linear Accelerator are :
