DC and Ramp Magnet Power Supplies

In a particle accelerator, a large number of electromagnets are used to guide, bend, focus, and steer the beam of charged particles. Various types of constant current magnet power supplies are required, such as DC or slow varying, ramping and bipolar power supplies. The requirements of a power supply for these electromagnets are quite different from conventional DC power supplies. The power supplies are output current controlled, magnetic field being directly proportional to the current. Load to the power supply is highly inductive. The power supply converter should have wide conversion range for wide variation in output current. The output current stability specification is very stringent including short-term stability, long term stability and ripple.

A large number of power supplies have been developed for electromagnets of Indus-1 (450 MeV SRS), Indus-2 (2.5 GeV SRS) and other applications.
