Computer Network

Computer Centre provides fast, reliable and robust communication network to the scientists/ engineers of RRCAT. RRCAT has implemented its own organization wide network named RRCATNet, which comprises of about 2200 nodes. All major buildings have their own internal network based on CAT5/ CAT6 and all these buildings are inter-connected over Gigabit Ethernet. Remote access has been provided using DSL technology.

Centralised authentication based Internet, email and intranet access has been provided on desktops. Protection against virus and spam has been provided on the network through a centralized anti virus solution.

External connectivity on RRCATNet has been provided using three links

  • 2 mbps leased link over OFC
  • 512 kbps leased link over OFC
  • 34 Mbps/ 4 Shared leased Link over OFC
  • 34 Mbps/ 2 ERNET leased Link over OFC
Salient Features:

Physical Layer
  • A 2500 node, completely managed and switched network with 1300 PCs and other network devices.
  • 1 Gbps backbones to 48 buildings using 65 managed switches.
  • Seven OFC rings for connecting various buildings, with failover and load balanced configurations.
  • Network Convergence time in a ring < 50 micro seconds.
  • Network access using 56 Kbps analog modems, 8/2Mbps DSL modems and 100Mbps/1Gbps Ethernet ports.
  • Network Access control, in place on all the switched ports, thus allowing only registered devices to access the network.
  • Loop detection on all edge ports.
Services
  • SPAM and VIRUS controlled, clustered Email services to 1500 users using IMAP/POP/SMTP protocols with QMAIL as MTA and pine, Outlook Express and web browsers as MUA.
  • Replicated, LDAP based, authentication setup.
  • Internet access services for 1500 users using multiple server, load balanced and password protected proxy servers.
  • Secured DNS, WEB and MAIL services on Internet.
  • Linux NAS based, password, virus protected and windows accessible drives on the network (ZDRIVE).
  • Centralized Backup with a VTL of 4TB capacity, two LTO-4 capacity tape drives and physical tape libraries of 60 slots and 800GB / slot capacity.
  • All services provided using freeware and Open Source tools.
  • Centralized antivirus update distribution.
  • Anunet – Voice and Data/Email connectivity with other DAE units.
  • DAEGRID – Computing services using grids in DAE.
  • Video Conferencing – Over Internet/Anunet/DAEGRID networks.

Connectivity to other networks
  • Internet connectivity using failover and load balanced links of 34(1:4)Mbps and 34(1:2)Mbps from different service providers (BSNL and ERNET).
  • Connected to Anunet using 768 Kbps VSAT link.
  • Connected to DAE-Grid network using multiple 2 Mbps links.
  • Connected to National Knowledge Network (NKN) using the 1 Gbps link.

Management and Security
  • Physical layer management using Topology graphs and NMS.
  • Network Access Control for device registration.
  • Network status monitoring using email, screen popups and optional SMS alerts.
  • Internet traffic monitoring, logging, profiling and analyzing mechanism in place.
  • Multiple layers of security for access of Intranet resources from Internet.
  • Intrusion detection system on all four layers.
  • Provided using freeware and Open Source tools.
