Coolant Systems Laboratory  -  LCW Plant for Indus-2
A plant is being setup for cooling Indus-2 accelerator subsystems. Schematic of the plant is as shown in below. Work was started in 1999. LCW Plant consists of 3 water flow circuits:

DM Circuit:
A conventional demineraliser unit strips of cation and anion from make- up water to reduce its electrical conductivity to 1ms.This water is then stored in an array of MS tanks, lined with FRP. DM circuit is an off-line circuit which will operated, apart from initial filling up operation, only for top-up or in case of water leak due to accidents.

Primary Circuit:
Primary circuit consists of an array of SS pumps which pumps water from storage tank to the subsystems which need cooling. Hot water is collected in common return header and is passed through an array of heat exchangers where the hot water exchanges heat with secondary water. Once cooled in the heat exchangers, it is fed back to storage tank to be re-circulated again. Piping material is SS-304 and gaskets are of neoprene. It is taken care that LCW comes in contact with either SS or neoprene to avoid contamination..

Secondary Circuit:
Secondary circuit is soft water (SW) circuit. A softener provides soft water necessary for circulation. An array of cast iron pumps circulate SW through heat exchanger to extract heat from the primary circuit. Hot SW is then cooled in an array of cooling towers. Pipes in secondary circuit are of GI and gaskets are of neoprene.
General parameters of this plant are given below:

240

Supply Pressure (kg/cm2)
